Hutchinson Promotes Accessory Dwelling Units to Address Housing Needs

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is encouraging residents to consider building accessory dwelling units on their properties as a solution to local housing challenges and changing family needs.
The city's Planning Division is promoting what officials call "backyard homes" — small secondary structures also known as mother-in-law suites, granny flats or garage apartments. These units are officially designated as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).
"Got extra space in your backyard? Build a second home!" the city announced in a social media campaign this week.
According to city officials, ADUs serve multiple purposes for homeowners looking to create space for aging parents, adult children or generate additional rental income. The structures are allowed in most Hutchinson neighborhoods under current zoning regulations.
The city outlined several benefits of accessory dwelling units:
— They are permitted in most residential neighborhoods throughout Hutchinson — They provide housing options for multigenerational families or passive income opportunities — They can increase property values — They add housing density without altering neighborhood character
"It's easier than you might think to get started. Be part of the Hutchinson housing solution," city officials said in promotional materials.
The Planning Division emphasized that ADUs represent a practical approach to addressing housing shortages while maintaining existing neighborhood aesthetics. The small homes can accommodate various living arrangements, from housing elderly family members to providing affordable rental options for young professionals or students.
