HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson Police Department traffic officer has been recognized by a statewide law enforcement organization for his quick action that helped save the life of an elderly neighbor last fall.
Traffic Officer Lane Hammond received the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police Silver Award for his response on Oct. 2, 2025, when a woman ran to his home after finding her 85-year-old father surrounded by blood at an adjacent residence. The victim had sustained self-inflicted lacerations.

Without waiting for backup, Hammond went to the scene and began administering first aid, applying direct pressure to the victim's wounds with a towel to control severe bleeding while simultaneously staying in contact with dispatch by phone.
When other officers arrived, Hammond was already on scene providing care. Emergency medical personnel subsequently transported the victim to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, where he was stabilized, underwent surgery and was expected to make a full recovery.
The KACP Silver Award is presented in recognition of extraordinary actions that directly contribute to saving or prolonging a life.
Hammond's department credited his swift and decisive response as critical to sustaining the victim until paramedics arrived.
