JOPLIN, Mo. — No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College captured the Missouri Southern Stampede team championship Saturday morning, with three Blue Dragons finishing in the top seven to secure their second team title of the season.
Hutchinson scored 55 team points to win the 8K race, their first at that distance this season. Pittsburg State finished second with 68 points, followed by Missouri Southern with 108.
Sophomore Titus Kiprotich led the Blue Dragons with a second-place individual finish, breaking his own school 8K record with a time of 23:40.50. The performance marks the fourth consecutive 8K race dating to last year in which either Kiprotich or Dennis Cheriuyot has set a new Blue Dragon record.
Cornelius Kogo, who won the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic individual title in August, placed seventh with a time of 24:04.09 — the sixth-fastest 8K time in program history. Just two hundredths of a second behind, Esteban Ortega finished eighth in 24:04.11, posting the seventh-fastest Blue Dragon time ever.
Sophomore Farrin Mangelson rounded out Hutchinson's scoring with an 18th-place finish in 24:41.47. Freshman Esteban Oses Campos placed 30th in 24:41.27, recording the 12th-fastest time in program history.
The team championship adds to Hutchinson's victory at the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic in August.
The Blue Dragons will compete next at the FHSU Tiger Open on Oct. 11 in Hays.
