Hutchinson launches program to train small-scale developers
Information obtained from City of Hutchinson
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The city is launching a new program aimed at empowering residents to become small-scale developers and reinvest in local neighborhoods.
Build Hutch will provide yearlong training to help participants turn development interest into action through small, achievable projects. The initiative represents a shift from relying solely on outside developers to building capacity among residents who already live and work in the community.
The program is led by the city's Strategic Growth Department, with funding from the Hutchinson Community Foundation. Training will be provided by Neighborhood Evolution, a national leader in small-scale development education.
A kickoff event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Memorial Hall. The event will introduce the program, explain how the cohort will function and highlight how small-scale development supports the city's long-term growth strategy.
Participants will learn development concepts through real-world examples, receive project coaching and connect with lenders, contractors, city staff and community partners. The program will cover topics including incremental housing, infill development and adaptive reuse.
Potential projects may include home rehabilitations, accessory dwelling units, small multi-unit housing and small commercial or mixed-use developments.
The program is open to property owners, aspiring developers with little or no experience, builders, lenders, designers, real estate professionals and residents interested in strengthening neighborhoods.
