Hutchinson High School senior surprised with full-ride Rudd Scholarship during school ceremony

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Giselle Rodriguez thought she was heading to the counselor's office to sign a scholarship application. What she found instead was a room full of her coaches, teachers, administrators and her best friend — all waiting to tell her she had won a full-ride Rudd Scholarship.

The Hutchinson High School senior was surprised with the announcement this week during a special presentation that included members of the Rudd Foundation team and culminated with the presentation of a ceremonial check.

Rodriguez distinguished herself among more than 700 applicants in 2025, one of only 50 students statewide to receive the award. The scholarship covers tuition, room and board, books, supplies and other college expenses over four years. Scholars also receive mentoring, professional development and networking opportunities throughout their college careers.

"Receiving this scholarship opens many doors for me," Rodriguez said. "Not only have I been awarded a scholarship, but I now have the privilege to navigate my academic journey with the help and support of an amazing cohort and mentors."

At Hutchinson High School, Rodriguez has balanced rigorous academics, varsity soccer and part-time employment. She is a member of the National Honor Society, serves as president of HOSA–Future Health Professionals, participates in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme in health sciences.

The Rudd Scholarship targets students who demonstrate grit, determination and a strong work ethic. Applicants must hold a minimum 3.0 GPA, submit ACT or SAT scores, demonstrate financial need and be Kansas residents. The selection process includes letters of recommendation, essays and a final-round interview. The application window runs Oct. 1 through Dec. 1.

Since its founding, the Rudd Foundation has awarded more than 200 scholarships and invested over $10 million in Kansas students. Sixty percent of recipients are first-generation college students, and the program boasts a 100% four-year graduation rate among retained scholars.

Rodriguez said the moment carried deep meaning for her family.

"Both of my parents are immensely proud and overjoyed on my behalf, as this moment is also a culmination of their hard work and sacrifices throughout the years," she said. "I owe my work ethic and determination to them."
