Hutchinson firefighters extinguish basement electrical fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters responded to a basement electrical fire Wednesday morning in the 600 block of West Campbell Street, containing the blaze to a small area before it could spread.
Fire crews were dispatched at 9:43 a.m. to reports of a structure fire at a small residential home. Upon arrival, crews found light smoke coming from the building and discovered a smoldering electrical fire in the basement.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and crews conducted a thorough search of the basement for possible extension into floor joists. The fire was contained to a small area of the basement floor joist, according to a press release from Jeremy Unruh, division chief of operations.
The two occupants of the home were outside when firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported. The fire was contained to a small area of the basement, with smoke damage limited to the interior living space.
The Hutchinson Fire Department thanked several partner agencies that assisted with the response, including Kansas Gas, Evergy, Reno County Emergency Management Services, Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications and the Hutchinson Police Department.
The cause of the electrical fire was not immediately determined. No damage estimate was provided.
