HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Foundation of Life Ministries will open an overflow emergency shelter Dec. 1 to provide overnight services through the winter months, addressing growing demand for homeless services in the community.
The shelter will operate through March 31 inside a commons area of the church at 114 E. Eighth Ave., with capacity for up to 40 people per day, said Pastor J.K. Vann.
Hutchinson has a poverty rate of 15.24%, which contributes to housing instability in the community.
The new overflow shelter will complement services at Noel Lodge, Hutchinson's existing emergency overnight shelter at 400 W. 2nd Ave. Noel Lodge operates from 5:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily on a first-come, first-served basis with three family rooms and separate dormitories for single men and women.
Foundation of Life Ministries is seeking volunteers to help staff and operate the shelter during its four-month run. Those interested can contact the organization at (620) 259-9657 or Folmhutch@gmail.com.
