Hays Symphony to Present Free Halloween Concert Featuring 'Peter and the Wolf'
Fort Hays State University performance includes costume parade and hands-on activities for children
HAYS, Kan. — The Hays Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Children's Halloween Concert featuring Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" on Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Fort Hays State University campus. Pre-concert activities begin at 1:30 p.m. with the performance starting at 2:30 p.m., offering families a complete afternoon of musical entertainment made possible through sponsorship by Werth Wealth Management. The educational concert introduces children to orchestral instruments through Prokofiev's 1936 composition, which assigns distinct musical themes to story characters — strings represent Peter, bassoon portrays Grandfather, and French horns embody the menacing Wolf. David Macey, dean of FHSU's College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, will narrate the Russian folk tale while Music Director Benjamin Cline conducts the orchestra. "Peter and the Wolf is, quite simply, the greatest musical primer ever written," Cline said, emphasizing the concert's role as an entry point into classical music for young audiences. Pre-concert activities include a Halloween costume parade, an "instrumental petting zoo" where children can try orchestral instruments, and arts and crafts stations, with trick-or-treat bags provided after the performance. Free tickets are available at hayssymphony.org.
