Hays Pet Owners Face March 1 Registration Deadline
City officials urge residents to license dogs, cats and large snakes before late fees kick in.
HAYS, Kan. — Pet owners in Hays have until March 1 to register their animals with the city before facing monthly late fees of up to $50, officials announced this week. City ordinance requires annual licensing for all dogs, cats and non-venomous constrictor snakes exceeding six feet in length, with registration fees ranging from $5 for spayed or neutered pets to $25 for unaltered animals, plus an additional $50 fee for breeds classified as dangerous including pit bull-type dogs. Dog and cat owners must provide current rabies vaccination records, while snake owners need proof of microchipping to complete the process. Community Service Officer Nikki Hausler emphasized that pet tags are crucial for reuniting lost animals with their owners and avoiding shelter stays. Residents can register their pets at City Hall's clerk office at 1507 Main St., which is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday mornings until 11:30 a.m., or call (785) 628-7300 for more information.
