Hays Named 2025 Community of the Year by National Media Platform

HAYS, Kan. — Community Playmaker, a national media platform celebrating civic leadership, has named Hays as its 2025 Community of the Year, recognizing the western Kansas city for outstanding commitment to enhancing quality of life through innovative programs and community-driven solutions. The annual award highlights impactful initiatives in economic development, community engagement, public safety, arts and culture, and environmental stewardship, with Hays beating finalists Port St. Lucie, Florida, and Monessen, Pennsylvania.

The recognition spotlights Hays' balanced approach to sustainable growth, including pioneering water conservation strategies, the recent opening of a new multi-million-dollar high school developed with Fort Hays State University, and the new Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center that addresses childcare shortages while serving seniors. Other key achievements include the Accessible Recreation Complex for children of all abilities, the thriving Chestnut Street District with restored historic buildings, and signature cultural events like Wild West Festival and Oktoberfest that celebrate local heritage while drawing visitors to the community.
