Hays Fire Department Sends Crews to Battle Southern Kansas Wildfires
Local firefighters join statewide response to wind-driven grass fires in Clark and Comanche counties.
HAYS, Kan. — The Hays Fire Department has deployed firefighters and equipment to southern Kansas to help battle significant wildfires that ignited Tuesday across Clark and Comanche counties, including blazes that crossed over from Oklahoma. Strong winds and drought conditions have fueled the rapidly spreading grass fires, prompting a massive interagency response coordinated by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management.
Fire Chief Ryan Hagans said the extreme weather conditions mirror those during the devastating Four County Fire that struck north-central Kansas in December 2021. "When you have wind-driven events of this magnitude, no single department can handle it alone," Hagans said. "We are committed to helping bring these fires under control to protect lives and property." Officials warn drivers to avoid areas with restricted visibility or active fire operations, urging residents to give emergency crews space to work safely.
