Hays Fire Department Launches Annual Hydrant Testing Program

HAYS, Kan. — The Hays Fire Department will begin its annual citywide fire hydrant inspection and flow testing program March 2, a critical maintenance effort designed to ensure the reliability of the city's water and fire protection infrastructure. The coordinated program involves inspecting hydrant valves for proper operation, identifying damage or obstructions, and conducting flow tests to verify water pressure and volume in neighborhood mains.

The maintenance process also serves an important public health function by flushing water mains to distribute chlorine throughout the system, eliminating bio-filming and preventing sediment buildup. Fire Chief Ryan Hagans emphasized the dual benefits, stating that regular hydrant flushing guarantees crews have adequate pressure and volume for emergency response while maintaining water delivery system integrity. Residents may experience slight water discoloration during flushing periods, which poses no health risk, and drivers are asked to avoid areas where water is discharging from hydrants. Daily updates on specific flushing areas will be posted on the city website and social media channels.
