City commission to consider $850,000 for new police station furnishings
HAYS, Kan. — The Hays City Commission will consider authorizing up to $850,000 for fixtures, furnishings and equipment for the new police station at its June 4 work session. Assistant City Manager Jarrod Kuckelman reported that the $8.9 million facility recently passed the 50 percent completion mark and remains on schedule for a fall opening, making it necessary to begin ordering equipment now.
Outside agencies to pitch 2027 budget requests to commission
HAYS, Kan. — The 2027 budget season officially begins Thursday as several outside agencies present their funding requests to the city commission. Representatives from the CARE Council, Grow Hays, Fort Hays State University and the Downtown Hays Development Corporation will detail their financial needs for the upcoming budget cycle, which the commission will formally consider later in the year.
Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex to host trio of major summer tournaments
HAYS, Kan. — The Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex will host three major sports tournaments in June, bringing a significant influx of visitors to the city. The schedule includes the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Annual Midwest Slamfest Baseball tournament June 13–14, the Western Kansas USSSA State Championship June 19–21 and the Battle on the Plains USSSA Fast Pitch tournament June 26–28. Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Melissa Dixon said each event is expected to draw between 40 and 60 teams.
Thunder on the Plains returns to Municipal Park
HAYS, Kan. — Automotive enthusiasts will gather at Municipal Park for the annual Thunder on the Plains events in mid-June. A cruise night is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 12, followed by the main Car, Truck and Cycle Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 13.
Big Creek Crossing to host five-day summer carnival
HAYS, Kan. — Moore's Greater Shows Carnival will operate in the parking lot of the Big Creek Crossing mall from June 10 to June 14. The carnival will be open to the public from 5 to 11 p.m. each evening.
Hays City Band announces upcoming June performances
HAYS, Kan. — The Hays City Band will host three remaining performances this June. Upcoming performances are scheduled for June 9 and 16 at the newly built Hays High Performing Arts Center, with a final June 22 show at Fort Hays State University's Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. (Editor's note: The previously scheduled performance with the 35th Infantry Division Band was held on June 2 and has been removed as a past event).
Hays Citywide Garage Sale slated for mid-June
HAYS, Kan. — The annual Hays Citywide Garage Sale will take place the weekend of June 12–13, featuring sales located throughout the community. Maps for the citywide event will be available on the event's Facebook page and in print at the Hays Welcome Center.
Downtown Hays to feature free concert and Summer Art Walk
HAYS, Kan. — Downtown Hays will host a pair of free arts and entertainment events in June. The Lovegrass Music Festival Association, a local nonprofit, will present a free concert featuring High Country Hustle from 7 to 9 p.m. on June 11 at the Downtown Pavilion, and the Hays Arts Council will host its annual Summer Art Walk from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on June 19.
Hays High to broadcast World Cup watch party on video board
HAYS, Kan. — Local soccer fans can watch the U.S. Men's National Team take on Paraguay during a free community watch party at 8 p.m. on June 12. Organized by the Hays Recreation Commission, the game will be broadcast live on the video board at the Hays High School football field.
