GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The Garden City Commission unanimously approved a proclamation declaring July 31 as Mike Muirhead Day, honoring the retiring director of public works and utilities. Muirhead is concluding a nearly 16-year tenure with the city, during which the official proclamation credits him with spearheading critical infrastructure advancements, including the development of the Jameson Energy Center to lower wholesale power costs and ensure a stable energy framework for the community.
Garden City Arts to submit proposal for State Theater renovation
GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Garden City Arts plans to submit a proposal in response to the city's request for proposal for the vacant State Theater building downtown. Executive Director Katy Guthrie announced during Tuesday's meeting that the organization's programming has outgrown its current facility. Guthrie stated the organization hopes to renovate and repurpose the theater into a vibrant community arts center for residents of all ages.
Lee Richardson Zoo to close Aug. 29 for 'A Wild Affair' fundraiser
GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The city commission unanimously approved event requests from the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo for the organization's "A Wild Affair 2026" fundraiser. The approval allows the zoo to close to the general public for the day on Aug. 29, charge an admission fee for event attendees and serve alcohol during the gathering.
Housing Authority receives $89,250 for Pershing Manor fire doors
GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The city commission unanimously approved a request from the Garden City Housing Authority to utilize $89,250 from the city's housing trust fund for capital improvements at Pershing Manor. A contractor, whose name was not disclosed during the meeting, was awarded the bid to upgrade fire doors at the facility. The trust fund, which receives an annual payment in lieu of taxes from the housing authority, currently holds more than $185,000, ensuring sufficient funds for the project.
Officials highlight completion of Fleming Street intersection and new trails
GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Recent infrastructure and wellness projects across the city are nearing completion, with successful upgrades to the traffic lights at the Fleming Street and Spruce Street intersection. Additionally, new sidewalk and trail expansions connecting community paths are progressing well, aiming to promote health, wellness and pedestrian safety throughout Garden City.

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — A joint meeting held earlier Tuesday between the Garden City Commission, Finney County Commission, the city of Holcomb and regional township representatives was highlighted as a success.
