Moran Honors Fallen Kansas Officer, Addresses Government Funding in Weekly Newsletter
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, led efforts last week to honor a fallen police officer from his hometown while working to prevent a government shutdown, according to his Oct. 6 newsletter.
Moran introduced a Senate resolution with Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, to honor Hays Police Sgt. Scott Heimann, who was killed in the line of duty. The senator spoke on the Senate floor and attended Heimann's funeral service Friday in Hays.
"Sgt. Heimann embodied the very best of Hays, a tight-knit place where people look out for their neighbors, care for those in need and protect the vulnerable," Moran wrote in the newsletter. He noted the community displayed a church sign reading "Blessed are the Peacemakers Thank You Sgt Heimann."
On government operations, Moran said he spoke on the Senate floor Tuesday evening as funding was set to expire, advocating for passage of a short-term funding package to avoid a shutdown. The Senate Appropriations Committee has passed 11 of 12 appropriations bills, with three passing for the first time since 2018, he said.
The senator also announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture released funds for the Dole-McGovern Food Program, which he discussed in interviews with RFD-TV and AgriTalk. The program provides support for Kansas farmers facing low commodity prices and high input costs.
Moran led the Kansas congressional delegation in requesting President Donald Trump issue a major disaster declaration for the state following natural disasters, including wildfires. The request was submitted Sept. 17, 2025.
The senator met with the American Optometric Association to discuss vision service access and received an award recognizing his work on veterans' healthcare legislation.
Moran's office is accepting applications for spring 2026 internships and Senate Page Program positions, with a deadline of Oct. 19.
