Fire Crews Rescue Occupant From Burning Hutchinson Home

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Firefighters rescued a resident from a burning 2.5-story home Saturday evening, Feb. 14, after the occupant went back inside to save pets, authorities said.

The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to the 400 block of East 7th at 6:32 p.m. for a structure fire, according to Division Chief of Operations Jeremy Unruh.

First-arriving crews found black smoke coming from the eaves of the balloon-frame residential structure. Firefighters entered the building after dispatchers reported the occupant was still inside attempting to retrieve pets.

Additional crews arrived and launched an aggressive interior attack on the fire, which was found on the first floor, second floor and attic. A second-floor bedroom suffered a partial floor collapse during the incident.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The fire department thanked the Hutchinson Police Department, Evergy, Hutchinson Reno County Emergency Communications, Kansas Gas and Reno County EMS for their assistance.
