Family Fishing Derby Returns to Dillon Nature Center

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Dillon Nature Center will host its annual Family Fishing Derby on October 11, from 9 to 11 a.m., offering free fishing, prizes and outdoor activities for families.

The event, open to all ages, requires pre-registration but has no entry fee. Participants will fish at the nature center's upper pond, with limited fishing poles and bait provided on-site. Organizers recommend bringing personal equipment if available, noting that only worms are permitted as live bait.

"Fall is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and catch some fun," event organizers said in promotional materials. The derby aims to introduce families to fishing while promoting outdoor recreation.

Prizes will be awarded to participants, though specific categories and awards were not detailed. The nature center serves as an environmental education facility spanning 100 acres in northeast Hutchinson.

The fishing derby represents one of several seasonal programs offered by the nature center throughout the year. Previous events have drawn dozens of families seeking outdoor activities and environmental education opportunities.

Registration information and additional details are available through the Dillon Nature Center's social media pages and website. The facility is located at 3002 E. 30th Ave. in Hutchinson.
