Emmy winner Richard Thomas to perform 'Mark Twain Tonight!' at K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Thomas will bring "Mark Twain Tonight!" to Kansas State University's McCain Performance Series on Oct. 2, nearly 50 years after Hal Holbrook first performed the show on the same stage.
Thomas, beloved by generations for his portrayal of John-Boy Walton in "The Waltons," is the first and only actor authorized to perform the legendary one-man show since Holbrook originated the role.
The 7:30 p.m. performance at McCain Auditorium will feature Thomas embodying Mark Twain through storytelling, wit and humor in what critics have called a star-powered evening of theatrical brilliance.
Thomas has earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of the show. The New York Times praised his masterful embodiment of "the nation's one true comic genius," while Time Magazine highlighted Twain's "uproariously funny" and "pungently wise" humor brought to life through Thomas's performance.
The actor has graced stages and screens in numerous roles, including Mr. Webb in the Broadway musical "Our Town," Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird," and Nathan Davis on Netflix's "Ozark."
"Mark Twain Tonight!" was written and originally performed by Holbrook, who first brought the character to life on the McCain Auditorium stage decades ago. The show blends comedy and social commentary into what organizers describe as an unforgettable evening of laughter and insight.
Thomas's performance is part of the 2025-2026 McCain Performance Series, which features a lineup that includes Broadway musicals, acclaimed jazz performers and rock artists. The series showcases "Hadestown," "A Christmas Story: The Musical" and "TINA - The Tina Turner Musical," along with performances by Melissa Etheridge, Indigo Girls and Ben Folds.
Audiences will experience what organizers call a front-row glimpse into the life of Mark Twain as Thomas delivers the performance that has earned praise from millions of theatergoers.
Single tickets for the show and other McCain Performance Series events are available through the university's ticket office. Season tickets offering discounts of 10-20% for those who subscribe to seven or more events are also available.
The McCain Performance Series returns in September with what organizers describe as a full lineup of legendary musicians, fabulous Broadway musicals and dazzling entertainers.
