County administrators target 3 percent budget reductions
DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - As budget preparations begin, Dickinson County department heads have been instructed to find a 3 percent reduction in their operational budgets. Assistant County Administrator Marcus Rothchild reported that initial budget meetings will commence May 7, with the primary goal of cutting costs to pass property tax relief along to residents. Rothchild also noted a positive trend in county revenue, reporting that local sales tax collections are currently running 4 percent higher than the previous year.
Appraiser highlights new law capping valuation increases
DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - Dickinson County Appraiser Lisa Berg reported that recently signed House Bill 2644 will limit property value increases following a successful tax appeal. Under the legislation, property valuation increases resulting from an appeals hearing will be capped at 5 percent per year for a period of five years. Berg noted that while this strictly applies to values that have undergone the appeals process, it will offer taxpayers protection against drastic valuation spikes in subsequent years.
Tax foreclosure sale advances for 54 delinquent properties
DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - The Dickinson County Treasurer's Office is moving forward with a tax foreclosure sale for 54 properties bearing delinquent taxes from 2020 and 2021. The office noted a strategic shift in the county's process this year designed to protect public funds. Moving forward, the $400 in attorney fees and $160 in title work fees required for the foreclosure process will be assessed directly to the properties with delinquent accounts rather than being absorbed by the county.
State official provides briefing on data center impacts
DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - Paul Hughes, a deputy secretary for the Kansas Department of Commerce, provided a briefing on the potential impacts and infrastructure requirements of large-scale data centers. Hughes addressed common community concerns regarding water use, power demand and speculative development, noting that Kansas law requires a water conservation plan and mandatory grid-security reviews for major projects.
Hope Ridge Wind Project permit terminated
DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - Following a formal request from the developer, a resolution was adopted terminating the conditional use permit for the Hope Ridge Wind Project. Enel Green Power, through the project's development entity, requested the revocation of the project's conditional use permit, effectively rendering an ongoing lawsuit regarding the project moot.
Over $43,000 in public works upgrades approved
DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - Three bids totaling more than $43,000 for upgrades to public works facilities were approved. Contracts included $10,591 for structural steel at a public works site, $27,879 for decking and sheeting at the same location, and a $5,361 bid to replace heavily rotted rollup doors at the county's motor grader shed.
Public works reports progress on county bridge replacements
DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - The Dickinson County Public Works Department provided updates on several major bridge infrastructure projects currently underway, though specific road locations were not immediately disclosed. Dirt work is complete and concrete has been poured at one site, which is expected to open to traffic by mid-May. Meanwhile, crews have begun driving pile for another bridge, and the county's internal bridge crew is currently constructing a 20-foot bridge at a third location that should be completed in the coming weeks.
