KANSAS CITY, Kan. — No. 7 Cowley College scored three first-half goals Saturday, Nov. 8, to defeat No. 19 Hutchinson Community College 3-0 in the Region 6 Tournament championship game at the KCK Soccer Complex.
The top-seeded Tigers claimed their second consecutive regional title after building an insurmountable lead in the opening 33 minutes against the second-seeded Blue Dragons.
The loss ended an 11-game unbeaten streak for Hutchinson (13-3-4), which now awaits word on a possible at-large bid to the NJCAA Division I women's soccer championship. Official pairings will be announced early next week.
Cowley's defensive speed disrupted Hutchinson's offensive rhythm throughout the match. The Blue Dragons didn't register their first official shot on goal until the 73rd minute, though Bessie Simpson hit the crossbar and Olivia Tamaki struck the left post early in the second half.
The game's complexion changed when Hutchinson starting goalkeeper Evie Carvell left with an injury just six minutes in. Cowley capitalized with three goals before halftime.
Louyse Cristine opened the scoring in the 14th minute, Sara Cortes added another in the 22nd minute and Sophie Knaab completed the first-half barrage in the 33rd minute.
Blue Dragons backup goalkeeper Rylee Loague (3-1-0) recorded a season-high six saves.
Hutchinson fell to 3-5 in Region 6 championship games and 0-2 against Cowley in tournament play. The Blue Dragons hold a 15-8-4 all-time record against the Tigers and are 28-21 in postseason games.
