Careyville tornado siren to be repaired, relocated for better coverage
Information obtained from City of Hutchinson
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The outdoor emergency warning siren serving the Careyville subdivision is currently offline following an equipment failure possibly linked to a lightning strike, the City of Hutchinson announced.
Because the siren is aging and its current placement behind 1620 Center St. is not considered ideal, the city will repair and relocate the unit rather than restore it to its original position. The siren will be moved to approximately 2030 E. Ave. G, within the city's drainage easement.
The relocation is expected to improve coverage for the Careyville subdivision and surrounding area, provide better access for maintenance and repairs, and move the siren off private property.
Relocation and repairs are expected to begin on or before April 3. The siren will be placed back online once installed and tested at the new location.
The city is reminding residents that outdoor warning sirens are intended to alert people who are outdoors to seek shelter and additional information. Residents are encouraged to maintain multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings, including NOAA Weather Radio, local media and trusted mobile alerts.
