Bullpups Win Boys Varsity Tennis Regional Title
McPherson claims the regional championship with all six players advancing to state.
MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson boys varsity tennis team claimed the Class 4A regional championship Saturday at McPherson High School, finishing with 25 team points to outdistance runner-up Topeka Hayden (15) and five other programs. Rylan Unruh won the singles title with a 6-4, 7-5 championship-match victory over teammate Cooper Bohme, who advanced after upsetting No. 1 seed Eli Pfizenmaier of Clay Center in a three-set semifinal, while the doubles team of Jonas Emery and Mason Eisenbarth went unbeaten and surrendered just four games all day to also earn a regional title. Hayden Siemens and Jack Boese took third in doubles, and all six Bullpups qualified for next week's 4A State Tournament at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.
Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly credited Rylan Unruh with defeating No. 1 seed Eli Pfizenmaier of Clay Center. Cooper Bohme defeated Pfizenmaier in a three-set semifinal; Unruh did not face Pfizenmaier during the tournament.
