Bullpups Girls Varsity Tennis Sweeps Campus Invitational
McPherson tops seven teams despite brutal 30-mph gusts at Campus.
CAMPUS, Kan. — The McPherson Bullpups varsity girls tennis team claimed first place at the Campus Invitational on Tuesday, finishing with 33 points to edge Wichita East (26), Hutchinson (20) and five other programs in challenging conditions.
All four entries finished in the top three of their respective divisions. Audra Sandbo won the No. 1 singles bracket at 2-0, Ava Miller took No. 2 singles at 3-0, the No. 2 doubles team of Piper VanCampen and Anne-Marie Holmes went undefeated at 2-0 for first place, and the No. 1 doubles pairing of Brenna Sullivan and Sadie Krug earned third with a 2-1 record — all while battling wind gusts topping 30 mph.
"What impressed me was how unfazed our girls were by it," the coach said. "They accepted the conditions, competed, and found ways to win. All six girls finished in the Top 3 of their divisions, and three of our four entries went through the entire tournament without losing a match. That says a lot about the way these girls competed today."
