Bullpups Bounce Back with Senior Night Victory Over Buhler
Bengtson throws two touchdowns as McPherson finishes regular season 5-3 with 21-15 win over rival
McPHERSON — The McPherson Bullpups honored their seniors in style Friday night, defeating rival Buhler 21-15 to close the regular season with a 5-3 record and erase the sting of consecutive losses.
After back-to-back tough defeats against Mulvane and Augusta, the Bullpups responded with their most important win of the season. Junior running back Dane Becker gave McPherson an early lead with a short touchdown run on fourth down, putting the Bullpups ahead before the teams went to halftime tied 7-7.
Junior quarterback Carter Bengtson engineered the go-ahead score in the third quarter, connecting with sophomore Brody Hoffman on an 80-yard strike to put the Bullpups ahead 14-7. Early in the fourth quarter, Bengtson struck again, hitting junior Ashton Malm on a 45-yard screen pass to extend the lead to 21-7.
Buhler mounted a late comeback attempt, but the Bullpups' defense held firm to preserve the six-point victory and send the seniors out on a winning note.
The victory provides crucial momentum for McPherson heading into the postseason after dropping consecutive games. They will host Augusta on Halloween night for the first round of the Class 4A State Playoffs.
