HUTCHINSON, Kan. — In a heart-stopping finish that had fans on their feet, No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College pulled off a dramatic 30-27 victory over No. 2 Iowa Western Saturday night at Gowans Stadium.
With just 1:01 remaining on the clock, quarterback Christian Johnson found Derrick Salley Jr. in the end zone with a clutch 3-yard touchdown pass, capping off a magnificent 87-yard drive that will be talked about for years to come.
The thrilling victory marked the Blue Dragons' home opener and improved their record to 2-0, extending their winning streak over the Reivers to four consecutive games. This epic showdown between the nation's top two junior college football teams delivered everything fans could hope for — four lead changes, two ties, and enough drama to last a season.
Trailing 27-23 with just 2:20 left in regulation, the Blue Dragons took over at their own 13-yard line and embarked on the drive of champions. Johnson masterfully directed the comeback, connecting with Kordell Gouldsby for 20 yards and Bobby Shaw III for 13 yards before scrambling 17 yards himself to set up the game-winner.
Johnson was spectacular throughout the contest, completing 18 of 26 passes for 242 yards while adding 52 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The victory marked his third consecutive go-ahead touchdown against Iowa Western, dating back to last season's regular season and national championship wins.
The Blue Dragon defense rose to the occasion when it mattered most, forcing four consecutive incomplete passes on Iowa Western's final possession to seal the stunning victory.
Special teams provided the fireworks early, as Amir Hill blocked a Reiver punt to set up Hutchinson's first score. Jeffrey Manns delivered the play of the night in the third quarter, blocking an Iowa Western extra point that Jack Sells returned 102 yards for a defensive two-point conversion — a three-point swing that proved crucial in the narrow victory.
The Blue Dragons now stand 4-1 all-time in No. 1-vs.-No. 2 matchups and will take their perfect record on the road next Saturday to face No. 14 Iowa Central in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
With victories like this, it's clear why Hutchinson Community College football remains the gold standard in junior college athletics.
