COFFEYVILLE — Seven different players found the back of the net as No. 12 Hutchinson Community College women's soccer dominated Coffeyville 8-0 Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Freshman Poppy Smith led the offensive explosion with a five-point performance, recording two goals and an assist in the Blue Dragons' largest margin of victory over the Red Ravens since 2010. The game was stopped with 14:46 remaining in the second half due to the KJCCC's new mercy rule.
The victory improved Hutchinson to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Coffeyville dropped to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the KJCCC.
Smith wasted no time getting the Blue Dragons on the scoreboard, converting a feed from Olivia Tamaki just 55 seconds into the contest for her fourth goal of the season. The early strike marked Smith's second game-winning goal of the year and her second multi-goal performance this season.
Hutchinson continued its first-half onslaught with sophomore Hannah Lowe scoring her first career goal at the 3:29 mark off an assist from Isabell Van Fleet. The Blue Dragons added four more goals before halftime, marking the first time since Sept. 2, 2023, that Hutchinson had scored five or more goals in a single half.
Freshman Bessie Simpson registered two assists in the opening half, first setting up sophomore Sofia Bremmer's initial career goal in the 12th minute. Simpson later fed freshman Ava McAninch for her first collegiate goal in the 39th minute.
Van Fleet, Tamaki and Isabela Puccinelli each contributed three-point games with a goal and an assist. Tamaki scored her third goal of the season in the 36th minute, while Van Fleet found the net in the 39th minute off a Smith assist.
The Blue Dragons dominated possession throughout the match, outshooting Coffeyville 20-2 while holding the Red Ravens without a single shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Rylee Loague improved to 2-0 on the season with her second shutout, the 192nd in program history.
Puccinelli capped the scoring in the second half, first assisting on Smith's second goal of the game in the 75th minute before finding the net herself off a Maria Azevedo pass to trigger the mercy rule.
The victory extended Hutchinson's winning streak over Coffeyville to six games and improved the all-time series record to 20-5. The last three meetings between the teams have ended in Blue Dragons shutouts.
Hutchinson returns home Wednesday to face Dodge City at 6 p.m. at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.
