Blue Dragons' Championship Rematch Dreams Dashed by Late Cowley Strike
Information obtained from HCC officials

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The ghosts of last season's Region 6 Tournament championship game returned to haunt the No. 12 Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team Wednesday night, as No. 11 Cowley delivered a crushing 2-1 victory with a late goal that silenced the Blue Dragons' season opener hopes at Salthawk Soccer Complex.
What began as a promising conference debut dissolved into heartbreak when Mariana Andrade's 79th-minute header found the back of the net, leaving Hutchinson (3-1, 0-1 KJCCC) to contemplate what might have been in their first Jayhawk Conference loss of the season.
The rematch everyone had circled on their calendars lived up to its billing through 90 grueling minutes, but not in the way Blue Dragon faithful had envisioned. Cowley (1-0-1, 1-0 KJCCC) walked away victorious once again, extending their mastery over Hutchinson in the most meaningful games.
The first half unfolded as a tactical chess match, with both teams probing for weaknesses that never materialized. Neither the Tigers nor Dragons could break through, leaving players and spectators alike wondering when the deadlock would finally crack.
Cowley struck first in the 66th minute through Sara Cortez, whose goal came off a cruel deflection from a Blue Dragon defender – the kind of unlucky bounce that defines seasons. For 24 agonizing minutes, Hutchinson trailed in a game they couldn't afford to lose.
Hope flickered back to life in the 71st minute when freshman Olivia Tamaki converted a perfectly weighted Maria Azevedo pass for her second goal of the season, knotting the score at 1-1 with 29:29 remaining. For nine precious minutes, the Blue Dragons could dream of salvaging a point from their conference opener.
But dreams have a way of crumbling under pressure. Sophie Knaab's cross found Andrade's head with surgical precision, and suddenly Hutchinson faced an 11-minute eternity, desperately chasing an equalizer that would never come.
The statistics painted a picture of a contest that could have gone either way. Cowley managed just two more shots (13-11) but made their opportunities count with eight shots on target to Hutchinson's four. Blue Dragon goalkeeper Evie Carvell (2-1) made a season-high six saves in a losing effort, while Cowley's Julia Suelly needed only three stops to preserve the victory.
The defeat stings beyond the simple mathematics of conference standings. This was supposed to be Hutchinson's statement game, a chance to announce their arrival as legitimate championship contenders. Instead, the Blue Dragons must regroup quickly before traveling to face Coffeyville at 2 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
In a season where every point matters, the Blue Dragons have already learned that championship-caliber teams find ways to win games like these. Now they must prove they belong in that conversation.
