MCPHERSON, KS — A fire that began on a back porch destroyed a home in the 1000 block of South Ash in McPherson on Thursday morning, though both occupants and their dog escaped safely. The McPherson Fire Department responded to the blaze at 11:25 a.m., finding extensive fire involvement on the back porch that had already spread into the residence. Initial crews included two engines and three command vehicles with nine personnel responding to the original call.

The fire, which investigators determined was accidentally caused by a barbecue grill on the home's covered deck, resulted in what officials described as a likely total loss due to fire extension into the rear of the house and heat and smoke damage throughout. Additional support arrived from one more fire apparatus with three personnel, while McPherson Police, McPherson EMS, Kansas Gas Service, and BPU also responded to assist and shut off utilities to the residence. No injuries were reported in the incident.
