Arkansas City, Winfield Fire Departments Celebrate Christmas Traditions, Honor Service Milestones
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department hosted its inaugural Christmas party on Dec. 7, marking the beginning of what officials hope will become an annual tradition.
The event brought together firefighters, their families and friends for an afternoon celebrating service and community commitment. Activities included the department's first badge ceremony, years-of-service recognitions, community service awards and a special presentation.
Fire Marshal Gary Bowker opened the program with a prayer, followed by a reading of the department's mission statement.
The badge ceremony served as a central highlight of the celebration. In firefighting, a badge represents more than a uniform piece — it symbolizes trust from the community, responsibility to fellow crew members and a commitment to protect life and property, according to department officials.
"The badge is a reminder of the promise each crew member makes every time they step into the station," Chief Stuart Cassaboom said. "This first-year ceremony marks an important step in building a tradition that will carry forward for future generations of firefighters."
The department recognized EMS Director Jeri Wheatley for 43 years of EMS service, including 15 years of leadership with Arkansas City Fire/EMS.
Three members received Community Service Awards for outstanding dedication to public outreach, fire prevention efforts and strengthening the relationship between the department and community. Honorees included Capt. Thomas "Paramedic Pete" Rice, Reserve Capt. Mike Evinger and Firefighter/EMT David Kruse.
Years-of-service recognitions honored personnel at milestones ranging from one year to more than 20 years.
Recognized for one-plus years were firefighters/EMTs Tyler Arrowsmith, Isaiah Stephens, Patrick Rocke, Alec Petry, Parker Manning, Joe Camara, Cutter Plush, Jaxson Slater, Cade Gillock and Austyn Butler.
Five-plus years honorees included Lt./EMT Logan French, Firefighter/Paramedic Will Hankins, Firefighter/EMT David Kruse and Lt./Paramedic Daniel Dedrick.
Recognized for 10-plus years was Capt./Firefighter-EMT Tanner McClure.
Capt./Paramedic Josh Bowker was honored for 15-plus years of service.
Recognized for 20-plus years were Capt./Paramedic Brandy Rice and Reserve Capt. Mike Evinger.
Meanwhile, the Winfield Firefighters Association hosted its annual Christmas gathering Dec. 8, with support from the Winfield Fire/EMS Department and events happening across Cowley County.
The Winfield association recognized two members for outstanding service. Zach McCaslin received Firefighter of the Year honors, while Kyle Tatro was named EMS Provider of the Year.
