Altrusa International Donates Sensory Boxes to Reno County EMS for Pediatric Care

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Emergency Medical Services received a donation of calming sensory boxes from Altrusa International of Hutchinson to help emergency responders assist children during stressful medical situations.
The sensory boxes contain materials and activities designed to help children manage emotions and anxiety through tactile, visual and auditory stimulation. These therapeutic devices are commonly used in healthcare settings to provide calming sensory experiences that can reduce stress and help patients self-regulate during overwhelming situations.
"These will be a great addition of tools for our providers to help children cope with emotions during stressful situations," Reno County EMS officials said in announcing the donation last Thursday.
The boxes could be carried on EMS vehicles to provide immediate comfort measures for pediatric patients who may be experiencing trauma, fear or distress during emergency medical calls. Emergency medical technicians and paramedics can use the sensory tools to help calm young patients while providing medical care.
Sensory boxes typically include items such as fidget toys, textured objects, stress balls, noise-reducing headphones and visual aids. The tools are particularly effective for children with autism, anxiety disorders or those experiencing acute stress responses.
"We love having community partnerships that bring positive outcomes for our patients," EMS officials said.
Altrusa International is a service organization focused on literacy and community service projects. The Hutchinson chapter's donation represents ongoing efforts by local organizations to support emergency medical services and improve patient care outcomes.
Reno County EMS provides advanced life support ambulance services throughout Hutchinson and surrounding areas from its headquarters at 1701 East 23rd Ave.
