For the first time in school history, all four teams from Allen STEM Magnet School in Hutchinson will compete at the Kansas KidWind State Challenge on April 11 in Salina.

The achievement was announced Feb. 18 by Hutchinson Public Schools, USD 308.

In the 4-5 Division, the Whirlwinds placed first and the Golden Winders finished second. The Golden Winders also earned the Judge's Favorite honor. In the 6-8 Division, The Mavericks took first place, Da Minions finished second, and Da Minions also received the Judge's Favorite award.

KidWind is a national competition in which student teams design, build and test wind turbines, combining science, engineering and critical thinking skills.

Hutchinson Public Schools credited the students' perseverance and commitment to excellence for the sweep, noting that teams tested, redesigned and recalculated throughout the competition process. School officials also thanked parents and Allen STEM staff for their support and guidance.
