Negotiations on Boswell Park Future Delayed, Frustrating Residents
TOPEKA - An expected agreement between USD 501 and Shawnee County regarding the future of Boswell Park did not materialize at Thursday's board meeting, prolonging a years-long debate. During public comment, seven residents from the College Hill neighborhood, including a former school board member, urged the district to transfer the park to the county for better maintenance. Board Attorney Donna Whiteman later reported that the district had been awaiting a draft agreement from the county by 5 p.m. but had not received it. Board members expressed their commitment to resolving the issue, with Vice President Schmitt apologizing for the community's frustration. The board indicated it hopes to take action at a future meeting once the legal agreement is finalized between the two parties.
Board Approves $5 Million for Major Maintenance Projects Across District
TOPEKA - The Board of Education unanimously approved a $5 million allocation for major maintenance projects for the upcoming fiscal year. The extensive plan, presented by district staff, includes 37 separate projects affecting 18 different school buildings. Key initiatives include critical intercom system upgrades at all high schools and middle schools, a roof replacement at State Street Elementary, and significant flooring and wall updates at Highland Park Central Elementary. The plan also addresses widespread needs such as asphalt repair, HVAC system replacements, and tuck-pointing at older brick facilities like Topeka High and Topeka West.
Board Member Highlights Positive Culture at Robinson Middle School
TOPEKA - During board comments, Dr. Beason shared her recent positive experience visiting Robinson Middle School. She recounted being met by members of the 8th-grade student council, who gave her a tour and spoke with immense pride about their school, teachers, and building. Dr. Beason highlighted the "incredible" school culture fostered by the staff and students, noting it was a powerful example of creating a "sense of place" where students feel they belong and can thrive.
Call for More Male Educators in Classrooms Emphasized
TOPEKA - Board member Mr. Muñoz shared a takeaway from a recent visit with students in the district's teaching pathway program. He noted that the lone male student in the class expressed how the lack of male teachers throughout his own education was a key motivator for him to pursue the profession. Muñoz stressed the importance of having male role models in the classroom, stating that the district must continue working to ensure students see themselves represented at the front of the room to better foster student success.
Topeka West Marching Band Earns First Place at Competition
TOPEKA - Amidst reports on homecoming parades and other school activities, board member Ms. Bolley announced a significant achievement for the Topeka West High School marching band.
