15 hospital employees receive health foundation scholarships

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Fifteen employees at Ascension Via Christi Hospital Manhattan received Mary Lindquist Auxiliary Scholarships this summer to support their continuing education in health-related fields.

The Manhattan Community Health Foundation awarded the scholarships, which provide up to $1,000 per calendar year to full-time and part-time hospital associates pursuing additional education, continuing education, professional conferences or related educational expenses. The scholarship program was established in 2008 to continue Mary Lindquist's legacy of supporting professional development.

Six individual recipients received scholarships for various educational pursuits. Lauren Newell, an operating room registered nurse circulator, received funds for Certified Perioperative Nurse certification and preparation courses. Annette Conrow, a nurse manager in medical and surgical, was awarded funds for AMSN Conference registration and hotel expenses.

Jeremiah Heck, an operating room registered nurse, received funds for CNOR certification exam fees and preparation materials. Maggie Baumgartner, an emergency department registered nurse, was awarded funds for tuition toward her family nurse practitioner degree at Walden University.

Sara Shea, a pharmacist, received funds for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists continuing education program to maintain her pharmacotherapy board certification. Tamica Smith, a telemetry technician in the intensive care unit, was awarded funds to obtain her certified nursing assistant license at Manhattan Area Technical College.

Nine physical and occupational therapists in rehabilitation services received scholarships to attend a shoulder course: Cody Hullman, Emily Murchison, Emily Nichols, Jarrett Stanton, Jason Wollenberg, Lindsay Wright, Megan Engle, Nicholas Long and Samantha Davis.

The scholarship committee reviewed 15 applications for this year's awards.
