Voters approve bond propositions for school upgrades
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - The USD 470 Board of Education on Monday extended its gratitude to the community for approving both Proposition 1 and Proposition 2 in last week’s bond election, clearing the way for major safety and modernization work across the district. The board also thanked the Steering and Campaign Committees for their role in earning community support, calling the outcome a step toward “safer, more modern and more inspiring learning environments” for students.
District to form committee for bond project oversight
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - With the bond measures approved, the administration will create a post-election implementation plan, including a steering committee to oversee projects, a public timeline with key milestones and a communications plan to keep families, staff and community members informed as work progresses.
School visitor procedures updated to enhance security
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - To strengthen safety—especially at schools without double-entry security—the district will move visitor sign-in to exterior doors and coordinate more closely with security staff while bond-funded entrance upgrades are designed and installed.
Middle school traffic flow, accessibility to be improved
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - In response to parent concerns, the district reviewed traffic flow and Americans with Disabilities Act access at Arkansas City Middle School and designated a priority pickup area for students with limited mobility. Additional signage, pavement markings and staff supervision will support safer, more accessible pickup and drop-off.
Board approves new flexible schedule for dual-credit students
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - The board approved an updated attendance plan for Arkansas City High School students taking dual-credit courses at Cowley College, following the college’s shift to a four-day instructional schedule. With parental consent, ACHS students may be excused from the high school campus when their college classes are not in session; students taking online courses will still report to ACHS. The plan includes added academic support, such as Friday tutoring at the college.
