Winfield Public Library to Host Smithsonian Transcription Event Preserving Post-Civil War Records

WINFIELD, Kan. — The Winfield Public Library will host "Voices of Freedom: Transcribing Post-Civil War Handwritten Records with the Smithsonian," a free Citizen Science event, Friday, April 10 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The event is part of Citizen Science Month and is being held in partnership with SciStarter, the Smithsonian Transcription Center and the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Participants will transcribe real Freedmen's Bureau documents through the Smithsonian Transcription Center, helping make the post-Civil War records searchable and accessible for researchers, educators and families.

No experience is necessary. Participants need only bring curiosity and a device with Wi-Fi. The library has a limited number of laptops available to check out with a library card.
