Winfield Fire Department Responds to Grass Fires, House Fire in Two-Day Stretch

WINFIELD, Kan. — The Winfield Fire/EMS Department responded to two separate fire incidents Wednesday and Thursday, including a large grass fire north of the city and a residential structure fire that displaced occupants and killed a pet, according to news releases from Winfield Fire Marshal Pete Rowley.

Grass Fires — March 26

Multiple grass fires broke out Wednesday afternoon in the area of 122nd Road and U.S. Highway 77 north of Winfield. Fire departments were dispatched at approximately 1:35 p.m., and while crews were en route, dispatch reported a second fire near 102nd Road and U.S. Highway 77.

High winds caused the fires to spread rapidly across a large area between U.S. Highway 77 and 91st Road, and from 122nd Road to 82nd Road. All fires were brought under control, though crews remained on scene for an extended period to monitor and extinguish hot spots.

One firefighter was evaluated by EMS for possible heat-related issues and was treated and released at the scene.

Responding agencies included Winfield Fire/EMS, Burden Fire Department, Udall Fire Department, Atlanta Fire Department, Ark City Fire/EMS, Cowley County Sheriff's Department, KDOT, Sumner County Task Force and Butler County Task Force.

Structure Fire — March 27

A residential structure fire at 802 E. 8th Ave. drew multiple agencies Thursday morning. Fire departments were dispatched at approximately 7:58 a.m. Upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the residence.

All occupants were able to evacuate before emergency personnel arrived. One individual was evaluated by EMS and released. One pet died in the fire.

Foul play is not suspected, Rowley said. The cause of both fires remains under investigation.

Responding agencies for the structure fire included Winfield Fire/EMS, Burden Fire Department, Udall Fire Department, Ark City Fire/EMS, Winfield Police Department, City Utilities and Cowley Emergency Management.
