Winfield Chamber Accepting Applications for Start-Up Showdown Business Competition
WINFIELD, Kan. — The Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for "Vision to Venture: Winfield Start-Up Showdown," a business pitch competition open to entrepreneurs of all ages, with more than $10,000 in venture capital available to participating businesses.
Individuals must apply online and, if chosen, compete in the Start-Up Showdown event June 10 at 6 p.m. at Southwestern College. Applications may be submitted for a new business concept or a business expansion idea. Business concepts must be based in Winfield.
The competition features three categories: Youth (14 and under) with a $250 minimum cash prize, Young Adult (15-21) with a $250 minimum cash prize, and Adult (22 and older) with a $500 minimum cash prize. The top three entries from each category will advance to compete at the June 10 event.
In conjunction with the competition, a series of free business classes will be offered at the Southwestern College Deets Library from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Babysitting and a meal will be provided. Participation in the courses will be factored into the scoring rubric at the event, though attendance is not required.
The class schedule is as follows: April 15, Business Development Basics; April 22, Developing Your Business Brand and Marketing Basics; April 29, Finances; May 13, Writing a Business Plan; and May 20, Organizing as a Business — legal, filing and licensing.
Organizers said proposals of special interest include innovations or designs of products, processes, systems, services or businesses that are economically sustainable and would positively impact the community.
