MCPHERSON, Kan. — The director of a local wildlife nonprofit will detail efforts to preserve Kansas' mixed-grass prairie — including a recent $16,414 state tourism grant — during a public presentation at 3 p.m. Monday.

Tricia Smith, director of Friends of Maxwell, will showcase photographs and discuss new developments at the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, an outdoor classroom that manages roaming herds of about 200 American bison and 50 elk.

The gathering, which will also feature refreshments, will take place at The Event Center at The Cedars retirement community.
