MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Multiple fire departments responded to a wheat stubble fire today as officials reminded residents to exercise caution with fireworks ahead of the July 4th holiday. Fire crews were forced to use a Polaris Ranger equipped with a small skid unit to extinguish the blaze after several brush trucks became stuck in muddy field conditions caused by recent rainfall. Fire officials warned that while grass remains green from abundant rain, wheat fields are dry enough to burn, and many fields throughout the county remain uncut due to wet conditions that prevent combine harvesters from operating. With fireworks sales locations now open across McPherson County for the June 27th start date, authorities emphasized that if field conditions are too muddy for farm equipment, they're also too challenging for emergency vehicles to navigate.
