Wellington's Zeka Wins Back-to-Back State Titles in Long Jump, High Jump; Dominates Final Day
WELLINGTON, Kan. — Wellington High School's Dru Zeka capped a dominant state track and field meet with three championships and a string of finals appearances over two days of competition.
Zeka claimed back-to-back state championships in the long jump and secured a third consecutive state title in the high jump on the opening day of competition Thursday. She followed that performance Friday with a gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles, with teammate Viv Wright finishing second to give Wellington a 1-2 finish in the event. Zeka also captured her third straight state title in the 400 meters.
Wright took seventh in the high jump on day one, earning a state medal for the second consecutive year, before her runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles Friday.
Ethan Boyd finished fifth in the high jump Thursday and competed in the triple jump Friday. Z earned a state medal with an eighth-place finish in the 100 meters. Jason Golden placed sixth in the 400 meters.
The boys 4x100 relay team — composed of Jalik, Cooper, Jason and Z — qualified out of Friday's prelims and finished fifth in Saturday's final. Lyndi Barton placed ninth in the triple jump.
Addy Wilson finished ninth in the long jump on day one, missing the awards podium by one spot. Claire Ginter placed 11th in the pole vault.
