New council members sworn in, changing governing body’s composition

WELLINGTON, Kan. - A significant shift in city leadership occurred Tuesday evening as three new members joined the Wellington City Council. Tim Hay, Mary Lucas and Michael Soetaert took their oaths of office, replacing outgoing members Kevin Dodds and Rick Roitman. The transition marks the beginning of new terms for the incoming officials, with Hay immediately questioning city staff regarding the status of the employee safety committee and the placement of a “Welcome to Wellington” sign during the new business portion of the meeting.

Extra paid holidays approved for city employees

WELLINGTON, Kan. - City employees will receive two additional paid days off this holiday season following a motion by Councilwoman Jan Grace. Noting that Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Thursdays this year, Grace proposed closing city operations on Friday, Dec. 26, and Friday, Jan. 2, to extend the holiday breaks. The council voted to approve the measure, which affects all non-emergency city staff schedules for the upcoming month.

Rail improvements targeted to boost industrial capacity

WELLINGTON, Kan. - Stacey Davis, director of Sumner County Economic Development, reported that work is underway to upgrade a short-line rail corridor, formerly the Blackwell Northern Line, which runs through the county. The infrastructure project aims to improve track reliability and support heavier loads, connecting local rail to the Union Pacific and BNSF networks. Davis stated that these improvements are critical for strengthening Wellington's position for industrial recruitment and supporting existing businesses that rely on freight access.

'Taste of Sumner' retail incubator launches

WELLINGTON, Kan. - A new retail initiative titled "Taste of Sumner" has launched within the county’s economic development office to showcase locally made and branded products. The shop is designed to serve as a low-barrier retail outlet for producers who are not ready for a full storefront and to act as a destination for visitors. Officials hope the project will reinforce community pride and encourage local spending while providing data to guide future tourism and retail efforts.
