Wellington Humane Society Plans Annual Fundraising Gala

WELLINGTON, Kan. (AP) — The Wellington Humane Society is preparing to host its annual fundraising gala to support the no-kill animal shelter's mission of rescuing and rehoming cats and dogs in Sumner County.

The nonprofit organization, which opened to the public in December 2019, relies solely on donations and community support to operate its 501(c)(3) shelter at 203 W. Hillside Road. The facility maintains a 90% save rate, qualifying it as a no-kill shelter where euthanasia is used only as a last resort for animals suffering from terminal medical or behavioral conditions.

The Wellington Humane Society serves the Sumner County area with pet adoptions, low-cost spay and neuter services, microchipping, nail trims and dog boarding. The organization also operates a veterinary clinic on-site and maintains a dog park adjacent to the main shelter building.

Since opening, the shelter has hosted various fundraising events throughout the year, including the popular "Run for the Paws" 5K race and one-mile run scheduled for June 21, 2025. The organization has previously held themed events such as "Dogs Cats & Cowboy Hats!" and partnerships with local businesses for percentage nights.

According to the shelter's mission statement, the organization strives to place all animals in responsible permanent homes while working to reduce births of unwanted pets and eliminate cruelty and neglect in the community.

The Wellington Humane Society receives no regular funding from state, county or city sources. The organization depends on memberships, sponsorships, grants and fundraising events to continue its operations and provide medical care for animals awaiting adoption.

The shelter is a valued partner of Best Friends Animal Society, which works with rescue organizations nationwide to save homeless pets. The Wellington facility features both adoption services and educational programs designed to promote humane treatment of animals.

Community members interested in supporting the shelter can visit wellingtonhumanesociety.org for information about volunteering, adoption opportunities, or upcoming events.
