Wellington High School Receives $50,000 STEM Grant from NextEra Energy Resources
WELLINGTON, Kan. — NextEra Energy Resources has awarded Wellington High School a $50,000 grant to expand science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, the company announced April 14.
The grant, made through the NextEra Energy Foundation, will fund a range of hands-on, interdisciplinary STEM projects serving more than 400 students. Planned improvements include creating an outdoor "living laboratory" classroom filled with native plants and regional species, a barn to house livestock for the school's Future Farmers of America program, updated robotics kits, and an updated lightboard for performing arts programs to help students learn about circuitry and lighting design.
"Our students are amazing individuals and very eager to learn," said Wellington USD 353 Superintendent Adam Hatfield. "This funding will enable us to provide advanced equipment, outdoor learning spaces and agricultural facilities to deepen their understanding of STEM concepts. We really appreciate NextEra Energy Resources supporting our district in continuing to provide quality educational opportunities for our students."
Frank Sedem, senior project manager of development at NextEra Energy Resources, said the investment reflects the company's commitment to the communities it serves.
"Investing in education by helping students develop crucial STEM skills is one of the most meaningful ways we can support our communities," Sedem said. "We are proud to help advance the district's vision of nurturing lifelong learners and empowering students to achieve their full potential through enriched STEM education."
The grant is part of NextEra Energy Resources' annual STEM Classroom Makeover Grant initiative, which aims to help schools increase student exposure to STEM education and careers by improving infrastructure, technology and resources such as software, equipment and teacher training. Five schools received similar grants last year.
NextEra Energy Resources describes itself as America's largest energy infrastructure developer and builder.
