Wellington Firefighters Battle West Wellington House Fire, Rescue Two Dogs

WELLINGTON, Kan. — Wellington Fire/EMS responded to a structure fire in West Wellington on Friday, containing the blaze before it could spread to the main living areas of the home and rescuing two dogs from the basement, according to the department.

According to a June 12 post on Wellington Fire/EMS's official Facebook page (facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0Xwft7CHMd8R83MpPY6NkTHy5vJNrsvAfNgD6Cm4Poyg66M3Trj9bL6surDp8yG3ul&id=61565890838391), crews achieved a quick knockdown of the fire, successfully preventing it from spreading into the main living areas of the house. Both dogs rescued from the basement were reported safe.

The incident took a physical toll on responders. Two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion during the fire. One was treated and cleared at the scene, while a second was transported to a local emergency department for further treatment, according to the post.

Multiple agencies provided mutual aid during the response, including Fire District 9, Mayfield Fire, Sumner County Emergency Management, Wellington Police Department, Wellington Utility and Sumner County Dispatch.

"Thank you to everyone involved for your professionalism and support when it mattered most," the department said in the post.

The fire remains under investigation. No additional details regarding the cause or estimated damage were immediately available.
