Wellington Fire/EMS Now Able to Administer Antibiotic for Sepsis in the Field
WELLINGTON, Kan. — Wellington Fire/EMS has expanded its prehospital treatment capabilities, announcing it is now able to administer Rocephin (ceftriaxone), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, in the field for patients showing signs and symptoms of severe sepsis.
The advancement allows crews to begin critical treatment before a patient arrives at the hospital, a significant development given that research shows even small delays in antibiotic treatment can significantly increase the risk of death from sepsis.
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition in which the body's response to infection can rapidly lead to organ failure.
Studies have shown that earlier antibiotic administration can improve outcomes, reduce complications and shorten ICU stays.
"By bringing this capability to the field, we're helping close the gap between first contact and definitive care," the department said.
Wellington Fire/EMS described the advancement as part of its continued commitment to providing progressive, high-quality emergency medical care to the community.
