Board approves K-State Credit Union signage upgrade

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Manhattan Urban Area Planning Board unanimously approved an amendment to the K-State Credit Union's planned unit development at 610 McCall Road on Monday. The amendment permits the financial institution to replace its existing monument sign with a 108-square-foot pylon sign, which includes a 32-square-foot digital graphic display. The new sign exceeds the Community Commercial District's maximum size allowance by 8 square feet, but city planners recommended approval to match neighboring signage.

Planners defend strict driveway dimensions for emergency access

RILEY COUNTY, Kan. - During a review of Riley County driveway standards, staff clarified that requirements for a 16-foot vertical clearance and 50-foot curve radius—which exceed standard fire codes—are strictly intended to accommodate large fire engines in rural areas. Officials noted that overgrown trees and tight turns have previously blocked emergency vehicles from accessing homes, necessitating the expanded dimensions for newly constructed residential driveways to ensure safe ingress and egress.

Acacia Fraternity shifts strategy to Historic Resources Board

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Acacia Fraternity is shifting its development strategy to the Historic Resources Board following recent Manhattan City Commission action on its zoning request, which has drawn opposition from neighboring residents. Board members noted during Monday's meeting that the fraternity is utilizing a work session to test the waters with the Historic Resources Board. Preservation advocates and neighbors have described the board as the fraternity's biggest development hurdle. If the Historic Resources Board is amenable to a new proposal, the fraternity is expected to submit a revised rezoning application to the planning board.
