UPDATE: Train derailment closes 17th Avenue crossing, restricts K-61 traffic
Information obtained from City of Hutchinson
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Cleanup crews continued work Monday on an overnight train derailment that has disrupted traffic across a nearly 40-block stretch of railroad in the area.
Union Pacific requested a full closure of the railroad crossing at 17th Avenue beginning at approximately 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3. The crossing is expected to reopen by mid-morning Tuesday, Nov. 4 after cleanup operations are completed, according to local officials.
The derailment affected the rail line from roughly 17th Avenue to 56th Avenue. One lane of K-61 between 17th and 30th Avenues remained closed Monday to accommodate the safe movement of heavy equipment through the work zone.
No injuries were reported in the incident, and no hazardous materials were on board, the mayor said in a statement Monday. The derailed rail cars were carrying vehicle frames.
Mayor Stacy Goss said she spoke with a Union Pacific spokesperson Monday morning who indicated crews are working to clear the site safely, though the process will take time.
"Please remember to give all crews the space they need to work safely," the mayor said in the statement, asking residents to avoid the area despite photos of the scene being available online.
First responders, railroad crews and city street crews responded to the derailment early Monday morning, according to the statement.
Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and expect delays in the affected area. Officials thanked the public for their patience as restoration work continues.
