MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission will meet Tuesday to consider expanding the design scope of the Hickory Street reconstruction project, a move intended to fulfill street improvement commitments made to residents more than five years ago. Commissioners are scheduled to vote on a $28,973 change order with Alfred Benesch & Co. to include the 600 block of Hayes Street in the project’s design after city crews were unable to complete the work in 2025. The agenda also includes a presentation from the McPherson Cat House on its "Fix A Cat" spay and neuter program numbers, the approval of $50,000 in funding recommendations from the Special Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board, and the allocation of visitor attraction grants for upcoming local events, including the "Burnin' Down Main" chili cook-off and a fall "Wicked Walk & Shop."

At the study session, the McPherson City Commission will discuss a major replacement for the Fire Department’s aerial fleet and finalize plans for the 113th All Schools Day. Commissioners will review financing options for a new 100-foot aerial platform truck to replace "Ladder 1," a purchase city officials have previously estimated could exceed $2 million. The agenda also includes formal approval of the "Star Spangled Celebration" theme for All Schools Day, scheduled for May 7-9, along with the "After Dark" concert at Wall Park featuring the Blaine Younger Band. In other business, the commission is expected to authorize nearly $175,000 in seasonal and equipment spending, including $108,838 for McPherson Water Park startup costs, $35,810 for two Street Department skid steers, and a new $30,000 greens roller for Turkey Creek Golf Course.
