McPherson County Planning and Zoning Appeals board to hear subcommittee reports on data center, battery storage, hydrogen and nuclear power
MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson City Commission will hold a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday to consider seeking state support for the third phase of the Northview multi-use path. According to the agenda, commissioners will vote on adopting Resolution No. 26-09, which declares the city's eligibility and authorizes the mayor to apply for Kansas Department of Transportation Alternatives Program funds to help finance the project. The KDOT program provides federal funding to help local communities construct active, non-motorized transportation infrastructure such as pedestrian and bicycle trails. Aside from the opening call to order, approval of the agenda, and a final motion to adjourn, the grant application resolution is the sole item of business before the commission.
The McPherson County Board of County Commissioners on Monday will consider a traffic study recommending safety upgrades for two intersections on Old Highway 81, including one that was the site of a double fatality crash in 2025. According to the agenda for the May 11, 2026, meeting, the board will review the study that suggests converting the intersections at Arrowhead Road and 22nd Avenue to four-way stops and adding rumble strips. The board will also receive 2027 budget presentations from the County Attorney, whose proposal requests a .5% increase to $764,760, and from the McPherson Airport, which is seeking a 10% increase in appropriations to fund ongoing projects. Other agenda items include a request from the Public Works department to approve an $8,590 change order to upgrade a transmission on a new plow truck and a separate $7,642 request to install new wiring for the department's fuel system. Additionally, commissioners will discuss a support extension for server hardware at the Courthouse and Law Enforcement Center, the appointment of a new treasurer for McPherson Township, and a quarterly report from the McPherson Industrial Development Company.
The McPherson County Board of Planning and Zoning Appeals will consider a variety of land use proposals at its upcoming meeting on Monday, May 11. On the agenda for new business are a special use request for an event center and subdivision sketch plan, a rezoning request from agricultural to light manufacturing for Piping Technology, and a variance request for lot size. The board will also hear subcommittee reports on several ongoing topics, including the potential for a data center, battery energy storage, hydrogen energy transfer, and nuclear power.
The McPherson USD 418 Board of Education meets Monday at 6 p.m. at 514 N. Main St. to advance the district's $89.5 million bond program — including financing, architectural design work and a temporary location for career and technical education — and to take up a new cell phone policy. The board will also consider health insurance, hear a superintendent's report and act on consent items including personnel, early graduation requests, policy updates and an updated job description. Voters approved the bond issue on March 3 to fund facility upgrades across the district. The meeting will be live-streamed on YouTube.
