United Way hosting event to offer $26,500 in grants

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — The United Way of Reno County will host its inaugural "Spark Tank Live" event Sept. 25, offering $26,500 in grants to local nonprofits through a competitive pitch competition modeled after the television show "Shark Tank."

The high-energy event, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the 1861 Club, will feature four finalist organizations presenting their programs to a panel of judges and live audience. The competition aims to fund innovative solutions addressing the county's most pressing challenges in health, education, financial stability and basic needs.

"Big Ideas. Bold Solutions. Real Impact," reads the event's tagline, reflecting United Way's goal to connect creative nonprofit programs with critical funding.

Prize money will be distributed across five awards: $10,000 for first place, $7,500 for second place, $5,000 for third place, $2,500 for fourth place, and $1,500 for the People's Choice award selected by audience vote.

To qualify, organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits located in Reno County that have operated for at least 18 months. Applications must address one of United Way's four core impact areas: healthy communities, youth opportunity, financial security or community resiliency. United Way agency partners cannot apply for programs currently funded through United Way allocations.

The application timeline runs from July 8 through Aug. 8, with the final four programs announced Sept. 2. The event itself begins with doors opening at 5 p.m., pitches starting at 6 p.m., and concluding with a dessert reception at 8:30 p.m.

Beyond funding, organizers say the event serves as a platform for nonprofits to tell their stories, attract new supporters, raise awareness and accelerate program growth. Finalists will gain community exposure and engagement opportunities that extend beyond the competition.

The event has already attracted corporate sponsors, with the presenting sponsor level sold out. Other sponsorship opportunities remain available for businesses wanting to support local nonprofit innovation.

"This event fuels innovation and drives change by connecting great ideas with critical funding," United Way officials said in promotional materials, describing it as part of their broader mission to expand community funding and direct resources where they're needed most.

The United Way of Reno County, located at 111 N. Walnut Street in Hutchinson, serves as a nonprofit organization providing resources to local nonprofits and focusing on education, income and health initiatives.
